Two trips to NYC in one week. Not my normal schedule. The crew: Bruner, Becca, Amy, Babbs, and me. It was Amy's birthday, and a beautiful day. So, we took a somewhat planned, somewhat spontaneous trip into the city. New York Driver Becca drove us in...quite skillfully.
After putting in our names for The Drowsy Chaperone lottery, we hung out in Times Square (Bruner's favorite place in the WORLD...not true), then went back to hear our fate. Becca won her first Broadway lottery ever (good work!), and Bruner won as well! Three tickets between the two of them!
Five people, three tickets. What to do? It wasn't a hard decision: Amy's b-day, Bruner won, and Becca won. They took the Drowsy Chaperone tickets while Babbs and I set out on our own adventure to find tickets to a show with less than an hour before curtain. I do love adventures, you know...
We walked around for awhile, with a few ideas in mind, then tried to purchase cheap tickets at TKTS. Apparently, no credit cards taken at TKTS. Curses! So, we used our own yellow pages (a.k.a calling Gary) and he told us where a revival of The Apple Tree was showing.
Babbs and I ran from 44th to 54th...at 7:30pm...in Times Square...dodging the crowds. Yes, we are awesome. Didn't know if they would have tickets, but we got there, a little sweaty, and they had a fair student price...so we bought 'em! Half price tickets in the orchestra, row G, in Studio 54 (the formerly sketchy nightclub!). I had heard amazing things about The Apple Tree, mostly because Kristin Chenoweth is in it. I knew that the show closed on March 11th, too, so we would be lucky to see it!
The Apple Tree is a comedy, basically three one-acts. Simple
sets, hilarious songs, and some biblical themes throughout (though, as
two seminarians would gladly point out, not necessarily theologically
sound), all revolving the idea of one's decisions and what impact that
has on a person and those around them. It was a fun show, and we
were just stinkin' happy to get to see Kristin Chenoweth live. She is
a brilliant (and tiny) actor, and has great comedic timing!
After the show, we all met back together at a moderately sketchy tapas bar in Hell's Kitchen...then back home. Really, it was a fun night with good friends...and Bruner survived Times Square.
Again, the Drowsy Chaperone was awesome. A real treat to me, B, and Amy...thanks for your generosity and flexibility. Next time I win the raffle, you get a ticket!
